New coins and medals – 150th anniversary of Japan modern currency system

Japan Mint unveiled two new coins and a medal that commemorate the 150th anniversary of the japanese modern currency system. For the first time in history, Japan Mint has produced a ¼ oz gold coin.

 

Gold 5 000 yen coin

 

On the obverse, the coin bears the character “圓 (yen),” designed for gold coins issued in 1871, with a chrysanthemum. On the reverse, the design combines those of the current regular coins (six coins), i.e., a paulownia, cherry blossom, chrysanthemum, the Byodoin Phoenix Hall, rice ears, and sapling.

In 2015, Belgium wanted to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Waterloo battle.  This desire of the Belgian government was quickly opposed by the French government, due to the importance of this battle in French history. This conflict over the choice of subject for a €2 commemorative coin was a first within the European Union.

As we learned that the Netherlands would issue a €2 ERASMUS coin, Portugal presented to the public its draft coin for this joint issue scheduled for 07/01/2022.

The Portuguese coin is based on the original design by Joaquin Jimenez, engraver in chief of the Monnaie de Paris.

The national side will feature the sentence “Programa ERASMUS”, for ERASMUS program with the name of the issuing country, Portugal. The name of the Portuguese Mint “CASA DA MOEDA” will be engraved at 6 o’clock.
