In the summer of 2022, Mr. Giovanni Van De Velde was appointed Commissioner of Mints, following the retirement of his predecessor, Mrs. Van Herzele. He is therefore the new CEO of the Royal Belgian Mint. NUMISMAG took advantage of his recent appointment to discuss with him how he perceives his new position, a few weeks after his appointment.

€2 commemorative coin 2023 from LITHUANIA “TOGETHER WITH UKRAINE”

The Lithuanian Mint has announced the issuance in the first quarter of 2023 of a €2 commemorative coin dedicated to Ukraine and the European solidarity brought in support of this country. The national side of this coin is illustrated by a sunflower, the emblematic plant of the country. The petals of the flower are in the shape of human figures holding hands. The sunflower also symbolizes the rising sun and a new beginning.

The composition of this side is dominated by the Lithuanian inscription meaning “together with Ukraine” (“KARTU SU UKRAINA”)....

2022 marks 100 years since the Border Guard was set up. The Estonian Border Guard was founded in 1922 and its work was interrupted in 1940 by the Soviet Occupation. A gold coin that was recently discovered on the south coast of Newfoundland may be the oldest known English coin found archaeologically in Canada. The “175ᵉ Birthday of Alexander Graham Bell” commemorative $1 coin highlights Bell’s contributions and accomplishments, including a record-breaking hydrofoil and the first powered aircraft to fly in Canada. 2022 €10 Belgian silver coin – 100 years of the unknown soldier’s monument

Four years after the Armistice, on November 11, 1922, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was inaugurated by King Albert. The remains reburied for this ceremony were chosen at random by a blind war veteran from Bruges from among five bodies of Belgian fallen soldiers who were no longer identifiable. The unknown soldier will be buried at the foot of the Congress Column, symbol of independent and monarchist Belgium. 2022 proof set dedicated to Customs from Japan

Japan mint issued the past week a prof set including six kinds of Japanese legal tender coins and a silver 925 medal (35mm, Approx. 20g). The medal depicts on the obverse a customs officers looking at the same future beyond generations. On the reverse  is engraved the Custom’s 150th Anniversary Logo. The announced mintage is 10 000 sets.
