2017 latvian €5 coin – 1917 LATGALE CONGRESS

The official presentation of the new commemorative coin of €5 took place in REZEKNE, Thrisday, May 3rd 2017, just before a concert devoted to the celebration of the “latvian Independence Day” and the centenary of the LATGALE congress.
This coin is dedicated to the congress of REZEKNE, which was held May 9th and 10th, 1917. It is the first public meeting of the Latvian nation. REZEKE is a Latvian medium-sized city which is the 7th town of Latvia by the number of its inhabitants. The obverse of the commemorative coin is a representation of the people taking part to the congress and photographed at that time.
On the reverse of the coin, a crucifix is represented, with women and children praying around him. The artist Ivars DRULLE who drew the coin also has a personal website which shows part of its work. The coin “LATGALE Congress” is struck by the company Faude and Huguenin SA, a swiss company specialized in medals manufacturing.
The mintage of this coin is limited to 3,000 units. The retail price of the coin is €50/unit.
