2€ Commemorative coin 2019

We present you the first 20 commemorative 2019 2 euro coins classified by country and in alphabetical order. As a reminder, the 2 euro coins have a diameter of 25.75 mm and a weight of 8.50 g. The bimetallic alloy is composed of Cupronickel and nordic gold (89% copper, 5% zinc, 5% aluminum and 1% tin).

Since 2004, the first €2 commemorative coins have appeared and since 2012, the countries of the European Union have had the opportunity to issue 2 coins per year.

The German Mint joins the French coin project on the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The German Mint takes up the drawing of the head of engraving at the Monnaie de Paris, Joachim Jimenez. The text on the left of the currency is simplified compared to the French version.

The General Council of Andorra (in Catalan: Consell general) is the legislative assembly of the Principality of Andorra. Dating from 1866 and by the Constitution of Andorra, it is located at Casa de la Vall in Andorra la Vella. It is composed of 28 members: 4 representatives for each of the 7 parishes. It was created as the Earth Council in 1419 and then as the General Council during the 1866 reform.

Centenary of the foundation of the University of Tartu
as the Estonian National University. The University of Tartu is the oldest university in Estonia and the only complete university. It was founded in 1632 by King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden in Dorpat, the city that is now called Tartu. Since Estonia’s independence from Russia in 1918-19, it has been called Tartu Ülikool (University of Tartu) and is the first Estonian-language university in the world.

2 euro 2019, Centenary of the birth of Manolis Andronikos 

Manólis Andrónikos is a world-renowned Greek archaeologist, born in Bursa, Turkey on 23 October 1919 and died on 30 March 1992 in Thessaloniki, Greece. He conducted archaeological excavations in the regions of Veroia, Náoussa, Kilkis, Chalkidiki and Thessaloniki, but his main discovery was made at Vergina, named Imathia on 8 November 1977, when he discovered what he identified as the tomb of Philip II of Macedonia. The tomb was inviolate and made sumptuous discoveries.

Greek poet from the classical school
Isle of Zakynthos Greece, 1792 – Keddington, United Kingdom, 3 November 1869

He is one of the greatest Greek writers of the 19th century. Driven by the enthusiasm of the beginning of the Greek War of Independence, in 1824 he published the first part of his Greek poems, The Patriotic Lyra of Greece (Λύρα), a collection of ten odes. Almost immediately, the publication of the odes translated into French by Stanislas Julien was very well received.

2€ Commemorative coin 2019 – Latvia

The Rising Sun

The motif of a rising sun was very popular at the time of the foundation of the Latvian state. The rising sun symbolised the new country. The sun motif created by artist Ansis Cīrulis in 1915 was first reproduced on the badges of the Latvian Riflemen Battalion and on the flag of the 1st Daugavgrīva Latvian Riflemen Battalion.

It was also part of the design proposal for the symbol of an autonomous Latvia, created by artist Ansis Cīrulis in 1917. Later on this motif emerged as one of the basic elements of the Coat of Arms of Latvia.

Samogitie, Lithuanian ethnographic regions
Samogitie is a western region of Lithuania (in Lithuanian: Žemaitija).

The centre of the national side of the coin features a bear standing on its hind legs, with a chain collar on the neck. It has been depicted in the coat of arms of Samogitia since the 16th century. The bear is situated against a shield topped with a crown, which is held by an armoured soldier (a symbol of courage, sacrifice and patriotism) and a goddess with an anchor (a symbol of hope). Below is a Latin inscription PATRIA UNA (one fatherland).The composition is surrounded by inscriptions LIETUVA (Lithuania) and ŽEMAITIJA (Samogitia), the year of issue (2019) and the mintmark of the Lithuanian Mint.

2€ Commemorative coin 2019 – Luxembourg
100 years of universal suffrage in Luxembourg

 

 

This commemorative coin will be on sale from the beginning of the year in January. It is sold in rolls (25 units), per unit in capsule, in box BE 2019, the annual BU box and in coincident in BU quality. It will be issued between September and December 2019.

This coin will most probably be integrated into a multi-year BE box of commemorative €2 coins. Luxembourg issues one every three years on average. Based on previous years’ print runs, an additional 2,000 BE parts will be required.

According to our sources within the BCL, the graphics of the coin are not permanently fixed. The final design will be validated in September.

500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci,
famous painter, sculptor, inventor, engineer, architect, astronomer

This character in the piece is taken from a fragment of the painting “The Baptism of Christ” exhibited at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. This painting, begun by Andrea del Verrocchio, was completed by Leonardo da Vinci between 1472 and 1475. It represents Saint John the Baptist giving baptism to Christ in the waters of the Jordan River. It is on display at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

On the picture the angel has lost his halo. This is not due to the artist’s will, but it was the European Commission that had all the halos removed from the euro coins because there is a ban on reproducing religious symbols!
