In 2019 and 2020, the Netherlands will celebrate 75 years of freedom. The jubilee year of 75 years of freedom was officially inaugurated in Terneuzen on 31 August 2019 by His Majesty King Willem-Alexander. The ringing of a historic bell buoy heralded a year of commemoration and celebration. The celebration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) in The Hague on 24 October 2020 will mark the end of these 75 years of freedom.
On 5 May 1945, the Second World War officially ended in the Netherlands, which is why Liberation Day is celebrated every year on this day. The liberation of the Netherlands began earlier. Operation Market Garden, for example, liberated parts of North Brabant and Gelderland on 17 September 1944. To read more about Operation Market Garden, click here. This year, Liberation Day will be celebrated for the 75th time.
Several collectors will be issued, including a silver commemorative coins set. Three countries involved in ending World War II will commemorate in 2020. The coins of Canada, England and the Netherlands are brought together by the Royal Dutch Mint in the ‘Special set, “Europe Remembers”.

€5 coin “75 years of Freedom” Reverse
For the commemorative coin issued on the occasion of 75 years of freedom, the KNM depicted the anniversary date with a font that corresponds to the festive atmosphere of the liberation.
It is depicted in relief. The ribbon has a visible front and back, respectively glossy and matt, suggesting depth.
€5 coin 75 years of Freedom Obverse
The portrait of King Willem-Alexander on the front is formed by the same type of ribbon as the one on the reverse. A unity has been created between text and image and between the two sides of the coin.
