Greek government unveileved its numismatic programm for year 2020.
This year, Greece still mints two €2 commemorative coins to celebrate greek historic events.
€2 COMMEMORATIVE COINS
€2 COMMEMORATIVE CIRCULATION COIN DEDICATED TO:
“2,500 YEARS SINCE THE BATTLE OF THERMOPYLAE”
The Thermopyle battle is symbol of greek heroism against invaders coming from Persia. It was finally a defeat by is a key date in greek nation birth. The coin was designed by G. STAMATOPOULOS.
Maximum mintage of 735,000 pieces for circulation in rolls and 10 000 BU coin cards
€2 COMMEMORATIVE CIRCULATION COIN DEDICATED TO: “100 YEARS SINCE THE UNION OF THRACE WITH GREECE”
The region of Thrace located in the northeastern corner of the country was united with Greece after the end of World War I. The national side of the coin replicates an ancient coin of the thracian city of Abdera, featuring a griffin. The coin is designed by G; STAMATOPOULOS.

The persian wars are a series of conflicts between the powerful Persian Empire and greek city-states that ended in greek victory and in a triumph of a free men over despotism, allowing greek classical civilisation to flourish.
The obverse features a greek fighting a Persian, after an ancient greek vase. To the right appears the words “Hellenic Republic”. The Theme is bordered by spears and laconain shields marked with the greek letter “A” alluding to the crucial role of lacedaemonians in the victorious outcome.

On february the 26th, the greek central bank indicates that this mintage will be fan out this way:

- 365 coins will be allocated to dealers

- 10 coins will be allocated to comittee commemorating persian wars

“GREEK MYTHOLOGY – THE OLYMPIAN GODS – HERMES”
Hermes messanger of the gods features on the obverse of the coin. He holds the Caduceus and wears winged shoes, inspired by an old greek vase.
On the reverse the national coat of arms is encircled by the two snakes that topped the caduceus.

Ancient Messene is one of the most spectacular archaelogical sites in Greece, due to a goos state of preservation ofpublic buildings.
The obverse depicts the arcadian gateof the old city’s fortification wall. The middle jamb of the gate has remained in situ, in a half fallen position. The reverse features a stylised representation of ancient theater and the tiled floor of the orchestra.

“EUROPA STAR 2020 – GOTHIC”
This coin celebrates the gothic era of westren Europe. At the same time, byzantine Empire ruled eastern Europe.
On the obverse of the coin features Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118). In the background is represented the ribbed vaults from the Palace of Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes.
On the reverse appears the greek coat of arms in a star. The engraver used different frosted effects to give volume to this side of the coin.

The battle of Salamis was the turning point of the persian wars. A greek fleet numerical inferior to the persain fleet defeated it.
Themistocle is represented on the obverse of the coin. He was commander of Athen’s sailors and soldiers who took part to the naval battle.
The reverse features triremes (wharships with three banks of oars) used by both sides.

On the obverse the artist represented a greek hoplite (private), and behind him spears of a phalanx, part of greek armies strategy on the battlefield.
The reverse features greek hoplites marching in file at left against persian warriors at right. Greek hoplites images have been taken from ancient greek pottery and those of the persians reproduce bas reliefs from palace of darius in Persepolis. On the center, the national coat of arms is engraved.

This coin is dedicated to establishment of the national radio foundation (predecessor of the greek Broadcasting Corporation). It marked the official introduction of radio in Greece.

The reverse depicts an antenna tower and radio waves with the national coat of arms in the center.

This coin is dedicated to Myrtis, an athenian girl in Pericles time.
The obverse of the coin features a bust of Myrtis, a name conventionally given to an Eleven year old girl who died in the plague of Athens ( 430-426 BC). during the Peloponese war.
Scientists worked from her perfectly preserved skull and recreated her facial features using “Manchester method”.
On the reverse is depicted the DNA sequence of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, a pathogen causing typhoid fever.
It claimed thousands of live during the Plague of Athen.
