The trade relations between the Netherlands and China have a long and rich history. The Dutch were among the first Europeans to establish contacts with China in the 16th century, and during that time, the Dutch East India Company played a pivotal role in facilitating these exchanges.

In the late 19th and 20th centuries, the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij (Netherlands Trading Society) emerged as another major player in the dynamic trade between China and the Netherlands. This joint-stock company was founded on March 29, 1824, under the guidance of King William I, with the primary goal of promoting trade, particularly between the Netherlands and overseas territories.

Overall, these trade relations have significantly contributed to the long-standing and enduring connection between the Netherlands and China.

From 1882 onwards, NHM expanded its operations and entered the banking sector, primarily in China. These new endeavors gradually became more important than its original activities in commerce and logistics. As a result, NHM’s office in Shanghai was authorized to issue regional fiduciary rights.

In order to facilitate trade between China and the Netherlands, NHM introduced its own banknotes, which were widely accepted as a form of payment across different regions in China. These banknotes were denominated in US dollars and circulated alongside local Chinese currencies. Chinese merchants and traders readily accepted these banknotes, providing a convenient means of exchange for both Dutch and Chinese businesses operating in the country.

These activities allowed the company to establish itself as a financial institution and strengthened its position as a key player in trade. It also played a significant role in the training of Chinese banking executives in the Shanghai region. Furthermore, this contributed to establishing its credibility and influence among the local population.

The banknotes issued by NHM played a crucial role in facilitating trade between the Netherlands and China at that time.

In 1964, NHM merged with Twentsche Bank to form Algemene Bank Nederland, now known as ABN AMRO.

This Dutch bank issued several denominations in China, with two different issue dates.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in prices for tradable banknotes, as well as for “specimen” and “proof” notes, including other color trials.

When it comes to the 1909 5-dollar banknote, it is the most commonly available note for sale. The most affordable option is intermediate proofs (“progressive proofs”), which range in price from 250€ to 400€. They have been offered in lots on at least two occasions. For a one-sided proof, the price ranges between 2,500€ and 3,500€. Specimen banknotes can reach a price of up to 6,000€ (based on the Heritage sale of June 2023). A tradable banknote in TB condition is valued at approximately 3,000€. The highest recorded price for this banknote is 33,000€, for a tradable banknote in “PMG 66 EPQ” condition, which indicates mint condition with exceptional paper quality. According to Stacks Bowers, only 9 tradable 5-dollar banknotes have been graded by PMG.

For the 10-dollar banknote from the same series, a progressive proof sells for around 300€ in “near mint” or new condition. A final uniface proof is priced at 2,000€. A specimen in PMG 55 EPQ quality was sold for 4,800€. Additionally, an issued banknote in PMG 12 condition was also sold for the same price of 4,800€. Stacks Bowers reports that only 8 10-dollar banknotes have been graded by PMG.

Regarding the 1922 50-dollar banknote, we have only recorded two sales so far, and both were specimens. The first, in PCGS55 condition, was sold for 7,200€. The second, in PMG64 condition, was sold for 21,600€ in June 2023 by Heritage Auctions.

Lastly, in regards to the 1922 $100 banknote, CROWN CURRENCY AUCTION sold a PMG63 specimen in July 2023 for €17,000. A PMG58 specimen had previously been sold in 2018 for €9,000. The only banknote in circulation that was sold, in PMG30 condition, was acquired by a buyer for €7,500.
