2019 italian numismatic Program: VESPA TIME!

The Italian numismatic program is one of the most important numismatic programs in terms of number of issues after the Paris Mint. In 2019, several programmes are expected to be successful, such as the coin commemorating the Vespa, a symbol of Italian cinema in the 1950s and the dolce vita.

2€ Léonard de Vinci 2019

On the obverse is a detail of Leonardo da Vinci’s painting “Lady with ermine” (Czartoryski Museum in Krakow). In the left field are the inscription “Leonardo”, the initials of the author Maria Angela Cassol “MAC” and the monogram “RI”, an acronym of the Italian Republic. In the right field are “R”, the identification of the ZECCA (Italian Mint) and the dates “1519-2019”. Leonardo DA VINCI died in 1519.

5€ – 50eme anniversaire premiers pas sur la lune

On the obverse, a composition of the colours of the globe and the moon was made with the space-time network in the background. Above and below, the respective words “REPUBLIC” and “ITALIAN”.

On the reverse side is the footprint left by astronaut Armstrong on the lunar ground after the moon landing on July 20, 1969. The Earth is in colour and rising on the horizon. The engraver is Claudia MOMONI. The famous sentence of the Astronaut is also reproduced pronounced as he has just landed on the Moon: “A small step for a man, a giant step for Humanity”.

5€ – 150th anniversary of Public Accounting

Towards: View of the Palace of Finance, Via Cernaia in Rome, headquarters of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, on which the flags of the Italian Republic and the European Union fly and mention of the issuing power “REPUBLIC” and “ITALIAN”.

Reverse: Two geometric figures relating to applications of the golden number (drawings attributed to Leonardo da Vinci) from the treatise “De Divina Proportione” by Fra’ Luca Pacioli (Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan).

This currency is dedicated to Italian public accounting (RAGIONERIA GENERAL DELLO STATO). Other indications appear on this side of the coin such as the monetary difference of the ZECCA, the face value “5 EURO”, the name of the engraver “MOMONI” for Claudia MOMONI. Finally, the date 1869 indicates the year in which the Court of Auditors was founded in Italy.

In the background is the historic headquarters of the Command of Piazza Sant’Ignazio in Rome. On the high field, a free interpretation of the “grenade” symbol of the Italian gendarmerie (Carabinieri). The author of this play is “L. DE SIMONI” and the words “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA”.

On the reverse, some important archaeological discoveries are represented such as the statue of Vibia Sabina, the Phoros Trapeze of Ascoli Satriano with its griffins, the Euphronios crater and the Capitoline Triad. The date 1969 indicates the year of foundation of this specialized corps of Carabinieri.

On the obverse is a boy and a girl on a modern model of the Vespa colored in three different variations. In the background is the Colosseum. The words “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA” and the name of the artist “COLANERI” are also indicated.

On the reverse, a graphic composition of the profile and front panel of the Vespa is represented with elements and stylistic characteristics of the Piaggio brand. The inscription “VESPA” in italics appears on this side of the coin. It characterizes the logo of the world’s most famous scooter.

On the obverse is a section of the Berlin Wall with the author’s name “V. DE SETA”. On the reverse, a coloured mural is depicted breaking against the Berlin Wall in an explosion of colours and cement fragments. A rift opens, in which the dove of peace appears.

5 euro – 100 years birth of Fausto COPPI

On the obverse is Fausto Coppi’s profile on his right profile.On the reverse, in the hairpin bends, Fausto Coppi fled in front of two detached cyclists. The composition is closed by a forty-tooth bicycle pinion, recalling the death of the champion at the age of 40. He died of malaria after a trip to Burkina Fasso to promote cycling in Africa in 1960.

The obverse is illustrated by a view of the facade of the Palazzo Madam in Rome, seat of the Senate of the Republic. Above and below are the respective words “REPUBLIC” and “ITALIAN” identifying the issuing country of the coin.On the reverse is a representation of Cicero denouncing Catilina in the fresco preserved in the Palazzo Madame dating from 1880 by the painter and sculptor Cesare Maccari, who died in 1919. 5€ SANTA MARIA del FIORE Cathedral

On the obverse is in the foreground the dome that the famous architect Filippo Brunelleschi created for the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. In the background, the planimetry of the “clover” of the stands, the whole having been engraved by the name of the author Annalisa MASINI.

On the reverse, the octagonal geometric shape, an element proposed again in the drum of the dome by the architect Filippo Brunelleschi, delimits the detail of the “Putti Danzanti” of the Cantoria di Luca della Robbia (Museo dell’Opera del Duomo di Firenze).

The obverse presents a free interpretation of the portrait of the Emperor Augustus, right face, inspired by an ancient coin. This portrait is the work of the engraver Silvia Petrassi.

On the reverse is reproduced the detail of the spiral frieze of Acanthus, the lower register of the Ara Pacis, an altar dedicated by Augustus in 9 BC to Peace and displayed in the museum of the same name in Rome.

On the obverse is a portrait of Christopher Columbus, based on a painting attributed to Ridolfo Bigordi del Ghirlandaio. In the background is a golden dial, an instrument used to measure the angular height of a celestial body relative to the horizon. The engraver of the piece is Ulliana. PERNAZZZZA.

On the reverse side are the three caravels that circumnavigate the world. The drawing is inspired by a print by Gustav Adolf Closs from 1892. Inside the globe is the journey of Columbus’ first voyage.

On the obverse, inside a circle inserted in a five-pointed star, a female face represents Italy, with figurative elements taken from the coat of arms of the Italian Republic, the gearwheel and an olive and oak branch. At the top, between two points of the star, there is a turreted crown with the Europa Star Programme logo and the name of engraver Maria Carmela Colaneri.

On the reverse side, the detail of Jacopo Robusti’s painting or Tintoretto’s “Susanna and the Elders”, one of the Renaissance painter’s most famous works (on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna – Austria).
