Commemorative 2 euro coins 2022

Even before the 2021 2€ programmes are complete, here are the first projects for the 2022 2€ currencies. The European Union opens the ball with a project common to all EU members. It is followed by the Monnaie de Paris with a project on the theme of the Euro.

The €2 coins have value only if they are of good quality.

The design of the €2 coin for the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus programme, by Joaquin Jimenez of the Paris mint, has won the competition organised by the European Commission. The coins will be issued from 1 July 2022.

EUROPA

Commemorative 2 euro coins 2022
celebrating the 35th anniversary of the ERASMUS PROGRAMME

This design is a blend of two major elements of the Erasmus programme: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus itself, and the allegory of its influence on Europe. The former is symbolised by one of the best known representations of Erasmus.
The second is symbolised by a bundle of links running through the coin from beacon to beacon, representing the many intellectual and human exchanges between European students. In reference to Europe, some of these links form other stars, born of the synergy between countries. Figure 35, for the 35th anniversary, takes out the stars in a contemporary graphic style.

A drawing modified since its first presentation

A second modified version was presented at the announcement of the €2 ERASMUS 2022 issue by Cyprus. In the design of this second version, the country name is moved to the bottom right, and the words “1987-2022 ERASMUS PROGRAMME” are written in a bolder font, with the letters tighter. In the end, the text block creates a certain heaviness that covers the character of Erasmus much more. However, this new design leaves more room for the mention of the issuing country, which is probably the reason for this last-minute change

Version 1 (left) and version 2 (right)
The country’s signature was originally in the centre of the coin.

The competition projects

By a decision of 18 July 2019, the European Council decided to issue a commemorative coin with a common design on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus programme (ERASMUS). The commemorative coins will be issued collectively by all Member States whose currency is the euro.

On 2 July 2019, on the basis of a proposal from the Euro Coins Subcommittee, the Economic and Financial Committee had approved the principle of a common commemorative coin issue for 2022, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus programme

This choice was therefore buried by the European Council. For the record, the Netherlands has already issued a coin dedicated to ERASMUS in 2011. This coin is particularly prized by Dutch collectors as it is the first Dutch national commemorative coin, i.e. not a coin issued jointly with the other countries that have adopted the euro as their single currency. Depending on its condition, this coin is worth between €7 and €11 for a circulator.

Erasmus 2022 Project 2€ N°1

The superimposed silhouettes of young people’s heads facing in different directions contain numbers and letters scattered throughout the room that read ‘ERASMUS PROGRAMME 1987-2022’. The design is reminiscent of a map and symbolically represents the European international exchange of students and trainees and the network of educational institutions and training places.
Associations: head – human – thought – study – learning – training – academy – research – know-how – network – interconnection – connections – exchange – transfer – mobility – Europe – union – map – continent – international – places – institutions – universities – companies

Erasmus 2022 Project 2€ N°2

The Erasmus programme gives all participants, such as students, teachers and organisations, the opportunity to have a unique experience. On the one hand, there is the acquisition of knowledge, represented by a book as a sign of education and training.
Erasmus is a European programme, but it spreads not only in Europe through the programme countries, but also worldwide through the partner countries.
Erasmus mobility offers exceptional opportunities. This is symbolised by the drawing of the arrows on the globe, which represent the many ways in which exchanges can take place: physical, educational and cultural exchanges…
There are also people on the globe who make the link to learning, travel, sport and friendship, all of which are covered by the programme.

Erasmus 2022 Project 2€ N°3

The drawing shows how the Erasmus programme, over the past 35 years, has provided a great opportunity for all citizens to challenge themselves. The drawing illustrates youth and the desire to embark on a new adventure. The journey is the path of personal growth, represented by different symbols: sport, education, travel, independence, freedom, equality and employment opportunities; values that this programme has always embraced. Erasmus is a global experience that aims to lead to a higher level of empathy and inclusion to make democracy more effective every day.

Erasmus 2022 Project 2€ N°4

The drawing shows the bond between the young people, their arms stretched around each other’s shoulders and the word Erasmus, like an umbrella, above them. According to the artist, this is what characterises the Erasmus programme.
Under its umbrella, Erasmus gives young university students from all over Europe the opportunity to immerse themselves in an academic and cultural environment other than their own, and to broaden their minds and horizons by getting to know other countries, other cultures and other students just like them.
Our old continent has a vibrant youth, on which it bases its hopes to become an inclusive and diverse place to live and work, free from stereotypes, where all peoples can forge bonds of friendship and prosper in peace, equality and democracy.

Erasmus 2022 Project 2€ N°5

This design is a tribute to connections. It hopes to embody the union in diversity and global growth that the Erasmus programme has led to. The small circles symbolise countries and schools, but above all the communities that embrace the emissaries of new ideas and hopes that are young people and students. The elliptical curves represent exchanges, communication and close contacts for which the information age, which has shortened time and space, has no substitute.

Créé en 1981 situé dans l’île de La Gomera dans les Îles Canaries, ce parc naturel possède une forêt de lauriers qui couvre près des trois quarts de sa superficie. ESTONIA

Commemorative 2 euro coins 2022

2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the Estonian Literature Society. Eesti Pank is issuing a two-euro circulation coin in honour of this event. The coin will use a design by Riho Luuse.

Among the 34 participants in the design competition, second place went to Ivar Sakk, graphic designer and associate professor at the Estonian Academy of Arts, and third place to Martin Niglas, architect and student at the Academy.

The winning design depicts an open book with the words of the first president of the Estonian Literature Society, Jacob Hurt: “Kui me ei saa suureks rahvaarvult, peame saama suureks vaimult”, which means “If we cannot be a great nation by numbers, we must be great in spirit”.
