Last update on 05/31/2022 – The European Union has opened the ball with a project of €2 commemorative coin, common to all members of the EU. You will find as they are released the new 2€ euro commemorative coins 2022 of the countries of the Euro zone.
The design of the €2 coin dedicated to the Erasmus program, created by Joaquin Jimenez, Engraver General of the Paris Mint, won the competition organized by the European Commission. The coins will be issued from July 1, 2022.
EUROPE
2022 €2 commemorative coin
celebrating the 35th anniversary of the ERASMUS PROGRAM
This design is a blend of two major elements of the Erasmus program: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus itself, and the allegory of its influence on Europe. The first is symbolized by one of the most famous representations of Erasmus.
The second is symbolized by a bundle of links running through the coin from beacon to beacon, representing the many intellectual and human exchanges between European students. In reference to Europe, some of these links form other stars, born from the synergy between countries. Figure 35, for the 35th anniversary, comes out of the stars in a contemporary graphic style.
The 2€ Erasmus competition was open to all. Nearly 80 candidates competed. The design conceived by Joaquin JIMENEZ was inspired by a painting representing ERSAME, painted by HANS HOLBEIN. This painting is exhibited in the Louvres museum, a few steps away from the engraving workshop of the Monnaie de Paris.
Hans HOBLEIN was a Swiss painter, born in the city of Basel. He met ERASMUS when the latter came to live in this city in 1521. At that time, ERASMUS was already well known for his work throughout Europe.
Other artists had already depicted ERASMUS at a younger age, such as ALBRECHT DÜRER, in an engraving. But it is the works of Hans HOLBEIN that are the best known. Indeed, several paintings were partially or completely executed by HOLBEIN and then copied by students in his Basel workshop. Another portrait executed by the same artist but representing ERASMUS in a different posture is exhibited at the National Gallery in London.
A generic design modified since its first presentation
The issuing country designation was originally in the center of the coin.
The projects of the competition
By a decision of 18 July 2019, the European Council decided to issue a commemorative coin with a common design on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus program (ERASMUS). The commemorative coins will be issued collectively by all Member States whose currency is the euro.
On July 2, 2019, on the basis of a proposal from the Euro Coins Subcommittee, the Economic and Financial Committee approved the principle of a common commemorative coin issue for 2022, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus program
This choice was therefore endorsed by the European Council. For the record, the Netherlands has already issued a coin dedicated to ERASMUS in 2011. This coin is prized by Dutch collectors because it is the first Dutch national commemorative coin, ie other than a coin jointly issued with other countries that have adopted the euro as a single currency.
Depending on its condition, this coin is worth between 7 and 11€ in UNC quality.
In addition to the French design, the European Commission has released to the public several other designs by European engravers for this joint issue.
Project N°1 – €2 Erasmus 2022
The superimposed silhouettes of young people’s heads facing different directions contain numbers and letters scattered throughout the room that read “ERASMUS PROGRAM 1987-2022”. The design is reminiscent of a map and symbolically represents the European international exchange of students and trainees and the network of educational institutions and training places.

Project N°2 – €2 Erasmus 2022
The Erasmus program gives all participants, such as students, teachers and organizations, the opportunity to live a unique experience. On the one hand, there is the acquisition of knowledge, represented by a book as a sign of education and training.
Erasmus is a European program, but it spreads not only in Europe through the countries of the program, but also worldwide through the partner countries.
Erasmus mobility offers exceptional opportunities. This is symbolized by the drawing of the arrows on the globe, which represent the many ways in which exchanges can take place: physical, educational and cultural exchanges.
There are also people on the globe who make the connection to learning, travel, sport and friendship, all of which are covered by the program.
Projet N°3 – €2 Erasmus 2022
The drawing represents how the Erasmus program, during these 35 years, has given a great opportunity, to all citizens, to question themselves. The drawing illustrates the youth and the desire to engage in a new adventure. The journey is the path of personal growth, represented by different symbols: sport, education, travel, independence, freedom, equality and employment opportunities; values that this program has always embraced. Erasmus is a global experience that aims to lead to a higher level of empathy and inclusion to make democracy more effective every day.
Project N°4- €2 Erasmus 2022
The drawing shows the bond between the young people, their arms stretched around each other’s shoulders and the word Erasmus, like an umbrella, above them. According to the artist, this is what characterizes the Erasmus program.
Under its aegis, Erasmus gives young university students from all over Europe the opportunity to immerse themselves in an academic and cultural environment other than their own, and to broaden their minds and horizons by getting to know other countries, other cultures and other students just like them.
Our old continent has a vibrant youth, on which it bases its hopes to become an inclusive and diverse place to live and work, free of stereotypes, where all people can forge bonds of friendship and prosper in peace, equality and democracy.

This design is a tribute to connections. It hopes to materialize the union in diversity and global growth that the Erasmus program has led to. The small circles symbolize countries and schools, but above all the communities that embrace the emissaries of new ideas and hopes that are young people and students. The elliptical curves represent exchanges, communication and close contacts for which the information age, which has shortened time and space, has found no substitute.

On the left side of the room, the text “DANKE – THANK YOU – DANK U” can be seen. €2 euro commemorative coin – Estonia 2022
2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the Estonian Literature Society. On this occasion, Eesti Pank is issuing a two-euro circulation coin in honor of this event. The coin is designed by Riho Luuse.
Of the 34 entries in the design competition, second place went to Ivar Sakk, a graphic designer and associate professor at the Estonian Academy of Arts, and third place to Martin Niglas, an architect and student at the Academy.
The winning design depicts an open book with the words of the first president of the Estonian Literature Society, Jacob Hurt: “Kui me ei saa suureks rahvaarvult, peame saama suureks vaimult”, which means “If we cannot be a great nation by numbers, we must be great by spirit”.
