450th anniversary of the birth of Caravaggio
Michelangelo Merisi, born in 1571 and died in 1610, was called “il Caravaggio” after the small town in the province of Bergamo where he lived as a child. His painting is one of the highest expressions of art of all time, shocking and exciting.
To celebrate the 450th anniversary of his birth, the Vatican City State Mint has produced a two-euro coin with an engraving by the artist Chiara Principe. The image of the coin is that of the painting entitled “Boy with a Basket of Fruit”, a painting painted by Caravaggio in 1593 and exhibited at the Galleria Borghese in Rome.

Caravaggio painted this picture during his stay in Rome, after having worked as an apprentice in the studio of Simone Peterzano. Although it is one of the first works painted by Caravaggio, it is already extraordinary for its analytical precision and the sensitivity of the naturalistic notations with which it evokes the life of the fruit represented in the basket.

Apostolic Constitutions of the Second Vatican Council: Gaudium et Spes
Gaudium et Spes is the fourth and final Apostolic Constitution of the Second Vatican Council celebrated with a €100 gold coin from Vatican City. In the Proemio we read: “The community is composed of men who, gathered in Christ, are guided by the Holy Spirit in their pilgrimage towards the Kingdom of the Father, and have received a message of salvation to propose to all”.
