2021 €2 Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union

The Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2021 is part of the Strategic Agenda for the period 2019-2024, which focuses on strengthening the European model in the world, with the aim of promoting the interests of European citizens, businesses and societies, as well as the way of life.

The covid-19 pandemic, which hit the world in 2020, has given Portugal greater responsibility in defining specific priorities and lines of action for the first half of 2021, such as economic recovery, developing the pillar of social rights in the European Union and strengthening the strategic autonomy of a Europe open to the world.

“Time to act: for a fair, green and digital recovery” is the motto of this 4th Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which proposes to promote European values, resilience and interests in the global context.

The Portuguese daily press reported that the 500,000 UNC coins intended for circulation had already been delivered to the Portuguese Central Bank. They were minted in November and December 2021 in the INCM’s plant.

The coin will be officially put into circulation on 01/04/2021.

It is the third commemorative €2 coin dedicated to the Portuguese presidency of the European Union that this country has issued since 01/01/2004, when the moratorium on the issuance of commemorative circulation coins for countries that have adopted the euro expired.
