On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the euro, the Monnaie de Paris is offering “Focus on the 20th anniversary of the euro”, an exhibition dedicated to the European Union’s currency, at the Monnaie de Paris museum. Presented until December 31, 2022, the event addresses the different facets of the euro, the long preparation that preceded its manufacture and its entry into circulation, as well as all the communication tools put in place to inform and educate people about this vast exchange operation that shook up traditional scales of value. A display case shows the new national sides of the €1 and €2 coins put into circulation on 1 January 2022.

Officially adopted as the single currency in 1999, the euro replaced 14 former national currencies, including the franc, from 1 January 2002. The euro is now the currency of 19 countries representing over 340 million people who use it every day. Today, the euro is the second most widely used currency in the world.

In addition, to mark the 20th anniversary of the euro, the Monnaie de Paris is proposing a number of actions: the renewal of the national face of the €1 and €2 coins and the launch of a monetary collection.

Each euro coin has a European side, the reverse, and a national side, the face: in France, it is the Monnaie de Paris that strikes the metal coins. For a European country, changing its national side is only possible every fifteen years and must be validated by the European Commission and the European Council, in order to obtain the agreement of the other member countries of the euro zone. This validation was obtained on 26 July 2021, after the President of the Republic had validated the new design by Joaquin Jimenez, General Engraver of the Monnaie de Paris, which had been submitted beforehand to Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy, Finance and Recovery. It will adorn the €1 and €2 coins that have been put into circulation from January 2022.
