2020 Numismatic program of Portugal – Berlin World Money Fair

Casa da Moeda (Portugal Mint) unveiled its numismatic program for the year 2020. It was officially announced at the 2020 World Money Fair in Berlin.

Here you will find the different collection themes of Portugal’s coins.

 

The first €2 commemorative coin is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of United Nations. Therefor the reverse of the coin bears english and portuguese text.

This commemorative coin is a request of ONU General Secretary’s team, Antonio Guterres for 2020 portuguese numismatic program.

Mintage: 500 000 UNC coins, 5 000 BU coins and 5 000 proof coins.

The second 2020 commemorative coin from Portugal is dedicated to 2020 Olympic games of TOKYO. It is a joined issue with the potuguese Olympic Comittee.

The design on the reverse represents the Olympic rings and the cross of the Order of the Christ, one of the heraldic symbols of Portugal.

This coin is a joined request of UEFA and MDM, a german numismatic retailer.

MDM is the exclusiv retailer of the coin for international sales and Mint of Portugal is the retailer of the coin for domestic market.

This coin celebrates the european defending champion, Portugal.

The reverse of the coin represents a duel between players. On the obverse you can see a football playground and the UEFA logo.

Mintage: 25 000 coppernickel coins, 7500 silver proof coins and 5 000 gold proof coins

Fineness: Silver 925/1000 and gold 916/1000

This coin is dedicated to UNESCO WORLD PORTUGUESE LANGAGE DAY.

It will be available in silver or coppernickel.

Casa de Moeda struck this coin because of an official request of UNESCO. More than 242 million people speak portuguese around the world.

On both sides of the coin, the engraver wrote universal human values.

The coin is part of the series endangered species. It is the third coin of this series. To obtain different colors of grey on the dolphin body, the engraver variated frosted surface effects.

The coin is a modern graphic interpretation of an half escudo from Ceuta. It is part of numismatic treasures series.

Year mark, the face value and the words “Portuguese Republic” are the sole changes made comparated to the genuine half Escudo.

Five coins are planned on a five years period.

The half Escudo from Ceuta was the first gold coin struck out of Portugal by portugueses.

In 2020, Portugal celebrates 500th anniversary of its post office.

The coin is dedicated to gothic art, in Europa star series.

This coin is quite inovating. All colored parts are polymer sheets, same texture as credit cards that Casa de Moeda also manufactures.

The design presented here may not be the final one.

The correct insert of polymer parts in a metallic ring is the challenge of this coin.

This coin is the second coin of Magellan coin series. It illustrate the passage of the strait in 1520. On the obverse Magellan’s pinguins are engraved. On the reverse, the artist has drawn the map of Magellan periple.

It depict the Lisbon harbour control tower, a very modern facility, built about 10 years ago.

    Will the polymer insert on the coin dedicated to the gothic style be on precious metals or on the copper-nickel version too?
