2020 Europe Remembers – 75th anniversary

of second world war’s end

The Netherlands are participating in a project of a combined set of several numismatic issues dedicated to the 75 years of freedom in Europe and the end of the Second World War. This project is in the process of being validated by the various Mints that would be involved in this pluri-national numismatic issue. NUMISMAG will tell you more about this project in the coming weeks.

2020 Europe Remembers” boxed set presentation ceremony

Wageningen, July 28 – The Chief Financial Officer of the Royal Netherlands Mint, Bert van Ravenswaaij, presented the first issue of the “Europe Remembers” coin series to the Canadian and U.S. Ambassadors. The reception took place at the Hotel de Wereld in Wageningen, the Netherlands. The Hotel de Wereld is known as the site where the complete surrender of the German occupation of the Netherlands was made official.
In the box set, the commemorative coins minted in honour of 75 of the freedom issued by England, Canada and the Netherlands are reunited.

On May 5th, 1945, Canadian General Charles Foulkes negotiated the terms of surrender with the German occupants of the Netherlands at the Hotel de Wereld. The Canadian General favoured the choice of this hotel because of its location on the old front, the absence of civilians due to the evacuation and its metaphorical name because “de Wereld” is the Dutch name for “the world”.
